Mycotecture: Building with Fungi
Starting with a short presentation on mycotecture and practical applications, then we’ll bring live mushroom cultivation bags and guide participants through harvesting the mushrooms and repurposing the remaining mycelium substrate into small biodegradable flower pots. After putting on gloves and masks, participants will break up the fresh mycelium in bins and press the moist, fibrous material into small plastic molds to form the pots. Each attendee will take their molded pot home—sealed, compact, and travel-friendly—to watch it continue growing and solidifying over time. This hands-on process introduces the fundamentals of mycelium materials while giving participants a living artifact of regenerative design.

Log Charring Atelier and A Prairie with Nine Rooms
This session takes place on The Ohio State University’s West Campus and introduces participants to Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban), a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation through charring, while showcasing an ongoing, process-driven art practice led by Associate Professor Paula Meijerink and Assistant Professor Parker Sutton, who since Autumn 2024 have been diverting felled logs from the OSU waste stream and transforming them into interactive, multi-hyphenate art objects. Designed to be seen, touched, and inhabited, these softened forms invite sitting, reclining, and climbing, with design decisions emerging through direct material encounters rather than predetermined outcomes. The workshop unfolds in a West Campus atelier situated between the highway and railroad tracks, where salvaged logs—selected for their idiosyncratic forms—are debarked, sawn, sanded, charred, brushed, washed, and oiled. Participants engage each step of this hands-on process while learning how charring protects wood against fungus and mold, extending both the material’s longevity and its expressive potential.
